]]> After completing her session “Working abroad,” Rita Devlin Marier remembered a few tips she wanted to ensure you all get. Marier worked as a foreign correspondent in the Stockholm bureau of international news agency AFP and currently freelances.

 

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for coming to the working abroad workshop earlier today. Just realised I forgot to mention two hugely important points:

- Expat newspapers, which are small, in English, and available in every city/country of the world, are a great place to start. They are often short-staffed and happy to accept students and junior reporters. Some of them are actually really good papers, and even if they aren’t, you can pitch good local stories to them, not only things of expat interest. Plus you are working in English and getting bylines and clips that you can show back home, not to mention a possible regular paycheck.

- Knowledge of your audience is hugely important: the big stories can often or always be obtained by wire copy, and if you freelance, you just won<t have the access of an established correspondent. You want to do something unique that will be pertinent to your readers. Maybe someone from your hometown is playing a role in an interesting event abroad, and this will probably be bought much more than a story that has been on the wire for a couple hours, even days, before you get to your contact.
